Requirements
Attendance at ALL scheduled rehearsals, concerts or other events is mandatory. We ask that you arrange your affairs so as to be able to participate fully. Just one missing musician seriously affects the entire Orchestra. Please arrive 15 minutes BEFORE rehearsal time; warm up and be ready to play five minutes early.
College of the Canyons has strict attendance rules and requires that we take attendance at each rehearsal. Two unexcused absences gives the Music Director the authority to remove the student from the Orchestra. Three late arrivals will count as one absence. If you know you will be absent, call the Director at least one day before rehearsal. Should you be ill and unable to attend rehearsal, call the Director as soon as possible. Missing a dress rehearsal or concert may result in dismissal from the Orchestra.
Concert Dress is important, and ALL Orchestra members are required to adhere to the concert dress requirements. Public performance is a visual as well as aural experience for the audience.
Intermediate Orchestra and Symphony of the Canyons Concert Dress: Girls / Young Women will wear a black dress or black skirt / dress slacks and a solid black blouse. Black hose and black dress shoes are also required. Please no tennis shoes. Boys / Young Men will wear a black suit or tuxedo, white dress shirt, black bow tie, black socks and black dress shoes. Please, no tennis shoes.
Prelude Strings Concert Dress: Girls / Young Women will wear a white blouse, black skirt or black dress slacks. Black hose / socks and black dress shoes are required. Please, no tennis shoes. Boys / Young Men will wear a white dress shirt, black dress pants, and a plain black necktie. Black socks and dress shoes are also required. Please, no tennis shoes.
Practice is essential. You are expected to prepare your individual parts prior to rehearsals. If you are unable or unwilling to learn your parts you may be placed in a less advanced group or asked to leave the program. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in their school orchestras, bands or other ensembles.
Instruments are to be kept in first class condition, and brought to rehearsals and concerts along with accessories such as mutes, valve oil, slide lubricants, cork grease, rosin, extra strings, reeds or other necessities. Have a pencil and eraser at all times.
Music Folders will be assigned to each student for the term, but they are the property of the Orchestra and must be turned in after the last concert. Make all necessary markings in pencil only. You must have your music at all rehearsals and concerts. Lost folders and music will result in a charge for replacement: $15.00 for folders and $3.00 for each piece of music.
Fundraising: The SCVYO Foundation currently costs over $50,000 a year to provide the quality program your child currently enjoys. This is in addition to the support provided by College of the Canyons. The fees charged for about 40 hours of instruction is less than what is charged for three hours with a private instructor. As a result, we expect parents to support the Orchestra by paying the modest fee and, when possible, by making a cash donation of any amount and/or by volunteering to assist in fundraising such as the poinsettia campaign or the Wine Classic. Please contact Sue Stanger at sue@suestanger.com regarding these events. Please read further about fundraising on the sponsor’s page.
